COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M University System has signed a two- year electric utility contract with Champion Energy Services for 2012 and 2013 that will result in savings to the system of approximately $4 million over the period and includes the continued use of wind power, a form of renewable energy.
The estimated value of the contract, which also includes Stephen F. Austin State University, is $37.4 million. SFA’s savings are estimated at about $2 million for the period.
Fifteen percent of the energy purchased through the contract, or approximately 43,000,000 kilowatt hours per year, will be in the form of Texas Wind Renewable Energy Credits.
Renewable Energy Credits are used to purchase the environmental attributes from various forms of renewable energy. These continued purchases of electricity generated from renewable energy put the A&M System in the forefront of Texas universities that are using renewable forms of energy to power their operations across the state.
“As employees of the state of Texas, we try our best to be good stewards of taxpayers’ money,” said B. J. Crain, chief business officer for the A&M System. “And it’s extra rewarding when saving money also means we’re helping the environment.”
The contract places the A&M System sixth in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership Program for Universities of the highest levels of “green” power purchases.
A&M System members participating in the contract include:
- Texas A&M Health Science Center – Institute of Biosciences and Technology
- Texas A&M University at Galveston
