COLLEGE STATION, Texas— Dr. James Wright, president emeritus of Dartmouth College and author of “Those Who Have Borne the Battle”, will be the keynote speaker at The Texas A&M University System’s 5th annual Military Friendly Symposium, hosted by Texas A&M University Oct. 8-9 at the Memorial Student Center.
Wright’s history of the treatment of military veterans throughout American history has been widely acclaimed. He is the only Marine ever to have been president of an Ivy League university.
The Symposium will also feature a major announcement by A&M System Chancellor John Sharp regarding the Texas College Credit for Heroes initiative developed through the Texas Workforce Commission. TWC Labor Commissioner Ronald G. Congleton and Texas Veterans Commission Executive Director Thomas Palladino will be among other state leaders attending the announcement.
The symposium attracts representatives from universities, agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout Texas for collaborative discussions regarding policies, strategies and operational practices for student veterans. In FY 2012, nearly 80,000 veterans received educational benefits under the GI Bill totaling $1.2 billion in Texas, one of the largest single sources of benefits in the state.
