Texas A&M System Regents named to Los Alamos National Laboratory Oversight Committee

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Texas A&M University System Regents created a special oversight committee for Los Alamos National Laboratory today, appointing Regents Charles Schwartz, Elaine Mendoza and Anthony Buzbee. Regent Schwartz will serve as chairman.

The three regents will advise the board’s management of our nation’s premier nuclear weapons research facility.

On Nov. 1, The Texas A&M University System assumed its oversight role at Los Alamos National Laboratory as part of Triad National Security. The members of Triad are The Texas A&M University System, Battelle Memorial Institute and the University of California.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is known worldwide as the once-Top Secret birthplace of the atomic bomb. Today the laboratory employs more than 11,000 employees and has an annual operating budget of more than $2.5 billion. Its work remains both highly technical and critical to our national security.

“The nation’s top nuclear asset is in good hands with The Texas A&M University System,” Chancellor John Sharp said. “This Special Committee for Oversight of Los Alamos National Laboratory will be this Board’s eyes and ears, and I am confident each member is up to this critical task.”
